Don’t wait for an “occasion” to show team members how much you value them and their contributions  

Offer tokens of appreciation to your teammates so they feel valued all year long. Here are ways to praise and thank team members:  


  • Say “Thank you.” Praise specific actions that co-workers have done well. That means more than a generic “Good job.” And don’t forget to say “Please” often as well. Everyone appreciates working in a gracious, polite atmosphere.


  • Ask your teammates about their families, their hobbies or their weekends. Genuine interest— as opposed to nosiness—makes people feel valued.


  • Offer staff members flexible scheduling during the summer months. If work coverage is critical, post a calendar so people can balance their time-off requests with their teammates’ plans.


  • Treat them. Almost everyone appreciates food. Take team members to lunch for a birthday, a special occasion or for no reason at all. Bring in bagels, doughnuts or a fruit basket for teammates to share. Home-baked cookies or cupcakes are always a hit.


  • Offer opportunities. People crave chances for training and cross-training. They want to participate on a special committee where their talents will be noticed. They like to attend professional association meetings and represent your organization at civic and philanthropic events.
